J.W. Kelly & Co.

J.W. Kelly & Co. is a revival of one of Chattanooga’s most storied whiskey legacies—where heritage, craftsmanship, and character come together in every bottle. Founded on the pioneering vision of J.W. Kelly in the late 19th century, the company helped define an era of American whiskey with a commitment to quality that reached far beyond the South.

Today, that legacy is reborn in the heart of Chattanooga, Tennessee. Honoring time-tested methods while embracing a modern spirit, J.W. Kelly & Co. produces distinctive whiskeys that reflect both tradition and place. From carefully selected grains to patient aging and thoughtful blending, every step is guided by a dedication to excellence.

James Watt (J.W.) Kelly established the first pot still distillery in Chattanooga in 1866. It was called Deep Spring and was located near present-day Chattanooga Choo Choo.

Blending old-world pot distillation techniques with a distinctive mash bill of corn, malted rye, and barley, Kelly developed this signature character. Carefully aged across five-, six-, and eight-year barrels, his whiskey delivered a richness and balance that set it apart.

Kelly’s commitment to quality quickly earned global recognition, establishing his brand as a benchmark for excellence from the American South to markets around the world.

Silver Springs Sweet Rye

When J.W. Kelly arrived in Chattanooga in September 1866, he opened up a storefront to sell groceries and then expanded into whiskey distribution and opened a distillery. Deep Spring Distillery produced more than ten labels, all named after Tennessee history and locales, including Silver Spring; which was produced from 1900 - 1919.

This Sweet Rye is accomplished with the addition of corn in the mash bill. The rye is housed in #3 charred oak barrels for a minimum of four years. The end result is a sweet & spicy rye whiskey. Silver Springs Sweet Rye Whiskey is bottled at cask strength.

The nose is molasses, burnt sugar, and toffee. The palate is caramel, nougat and hot cinnamon candy. The finish is spicy rye with a long dry finish.
