Baie des Trésors

A New Vision of Rhum Agricole

We do not see rum as an industry, but rather as the artistic expression of a terroir.

Exploitation Agricole du Galion, founded in 1849, has over 1800 acres of sugar cane fields that extend over the Caravelle peninsula and its surroundings. These lands of volcanic origin are ideal for cultivating cane.

Baie des Trésors is the pure expression of the Martinique terroir, without any artifice or additives. No sugar, caramel or other additives are added. The color is totally natural, and so is the taste.

Terroir-Driven Rhum

The lands of Galion are diverse and give rise to very different rums. Some, in the interior of Martinique, receive nearly two meters of precipitation each year, while others on the Caravelle peninsula receive barely half.

Cane and plots of land

The R583 cane variety grown on the Fond Basile parcel is very resistant to its arid conditions, which preserve and concentrate the sugars and other organic matter that determine the quality of the rum. Its fibrous nature requires a special extraction process, but the result is a unique aromatic signature that can be found every year.

On the Micholo and Brin Amour parcels, the R570 stretches over the hills as far as the eye can see. With its arid climate, the dry parcel of Micholo gives it a higher sugar and alcohol content and allows for richer fermentation to create the airy sweetness of Fleurs du Vent. On the other hand, for Brin Amour, yields are higher and the canes are gorged with water, which dilutes the sugar content of the cane, leading to a full, vegetal profile.

The rather rustic R585 canes from the moist Morne Carrière parcel will produce a less rich juice, but cause an explosion of vegetal notes characteristic of the area.

Aging

Cellar Master Stéphane Gouyer partnered with Master Cooper Seguin Moreau to determine the types of wood and levels of barrel toasting that would best reveal the organoleptic characteristics of each parcel.

Rum from dry parcels ages best in American oak barrels and rum from moist parcels ages best in French oak barrels. The use of old barrels will then allow the rums to be structured over time.

The heat and humidity of Martinique also contribute to faster ageing rums and influence their character.

Transparency & Traceability

The whole approach of Baie des Trésors is to produce 100% local rums made from the only cane produced on the Galion farm.

From field to bottle, Fruits of the Rains will always be the expression of the cane from the neighboring wetter parcels of Dufferet and Brin Amour, Flowers of the Wind from the dry parcels of Spoutourne, while Plein Soleil is a white rum made only from cane from the dry parcel of Fond Basile.

The cane is taken from a single parcel to the factory, where it is crushed, fermented and distilled together.

Sustainability & Local Responsibility

Sugar cane does not require irrigation, can be grown in a relatively dry climate, and does not cause soil erosion. Cane also returns a large amount of carbon to the soil and produces a significant amount of biomass.

In 2011, they launched a solar energy project on one hectare of cane.

For the past ten years, bagasse (the matter leftover after extracting the juice from the cane) has been recycled to supply a renewable energy plant built on the Galion lands, which creates 19% of the island's electricity.

Baie des Trésors believes it is as much their duty to protect the white breasted thrasher of the Caravelle, as it is to protect jobs in the banana centers and sugar cane fields. In addition they support the development of Martinique by allowing the communes of Le Robert and La Trinité to develop on their land, including schools, the stadium, the hospital, administrative buildings, and housing.

The Bottle

The bottle is made of 100% recycled glass, giving it a bluish tint. It is engraved with the contours of its namesake Treasure Bay, and the coordinates of the bay are engraved on the bottom of the bottle. The stopper is made of 60% bagasse.

The bottle's design embodies Baie des Trésors' search for excellence and innovation, which is reflected in the quality and sustainability of their products and by their actions.

Plein Soleil Rhum Blanc

By the sea, under a blazing and continuous sun, the Fond Basile plot contains sugar cane ideal for the production of a great white rum. In this dry zone, almost arid at times, the cane concentrates remarkable plant aromas that an appropriate distillation will be able to reveal wonderfully through the art of concentration.

Each year's rhum is a unique vintage representing that year's harvest.

“Extravagant aromas of overripe banana, crème brûlée, and baked pear slink upwards from the glass. Concentrated flavors of fresh cut grass, macadamia nut, and marzipan on the palate give way to a finish filled with chewy raw sugar cane and a refreshing herbaceousness." (Ultimate Spirits Challenge, 2022)

Flowers of the Wind: American Oak

On the Caravelle peninsula, caressed by the trade winds and relatively protected from tropical downpours, the dry plots of Spoutourne give birth to extremely subtle rums with a beautiful concentration of primary aromas of the cane. Light and exotic, it makes us discover Martinique in a new light.

“A decadent nose featuring salted butter, warm honey, sea grass, and crushed golden apple. there is a swift transition into tropical fruit seasoned with herbs. Lime and lime leaf, bitter orange peel and grilled pineapple waft to the nose punctuated by dried oregano, brown sugar and dashes of sea salt finishing through on the palate." (Ultimate Spirits Challenge, 2022)

Fruits of the Rains: French Oak

A little further inland, and a little higher, are the lands near the Habitation Dufferet. On these exposed slopes, the canes receive generous rain. Here the cane is prosperous, rich in juice, like a fatty herb, and it will give birth to round rums, generous and full of sweetness. The woody expression is different, frank with a delicate note of vanilla as well as a smoky, mineral touch. Let yourself be taken aboard for distant horizons.
